Predicting power outages caused by extratropical storms

چکیده

Abstract. Strong winds induced by extratropical storms cause a large number of power outages, especially in highly forested countries such as Finland. Thus, predicting the impact is one key challenges for grid operators. This article introduces novel method to predict storm severity employing ERA5 reanalysis data combined with forest inventory. We start identifying objects from wind gust and pressure fields using contour lines 15 m s?1 1000 hPa, respectively. The are then tracked characterized features derived surface weather parameters vegetation information. Finally, classified supervised machine-learning based on how much damage they expected cause. Random classifiers, support vector naïve Bayes processes, Gaussian multilayer perceptrons were evaluated classification task, classifiers providing best results.

Extreme outages caused by polarization mode dispersion.

We study the dependence on fiber birefringence of the bit-error rate (BER) caused by amplifier noise in a linear optical fiber telecommunication system. We show that the probability-distribution function of the BER obtained by averaging over many realizations of birefringent disorder has an extended tail that corresponds to anomalously large values of BER. We specifically discuss the dependence...

Predicting of Temporal-Spatial Sand Dunes Transition Caused by Marine Storms (Case Study: The Coast of Makran, Iran)

Studies show that 14 provinces are impacted by wind erosion and the movement of sand dunes. The sand originated from the shores of Oman Sea is the most important environmental hazards that threaten the already large number of rural settlements. Sands of marine origin are available on the beach and away from the sea of dunes in addition of marine origin, Predictive models for planning sustainab...

Will Extratropical Storms Intensify in a Warmer Climate?

Extratropical cyclones and how they may change in a warmer climate have been investigated in detail with a high-resolution version of the ECHAM5 global climate model. A spectral resolution of T213 (63 km) is used for two 32-yr periods at the end of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and integrated for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) A1B scenario. Extremes of pressure,...

Power outages, power externalities, and baby booms.

Determining whether power outages have significant fertility effects is an important policy question in developing countries, where blackouts are common and modern forms of family planning are scarce. Using birth records from Zanzibar, this study shows that a month-long blackout in 2008 caused a significant increase in the number of births 8 to 10 months later. The increase was similar across v...

Predicting the occurrence of super-storms

A comparative study of five super-storms (Dst<−300 nT) of the current solar cycle after the launch of SoHO, to identify solar and interplanetary variables that influence the magnitude of resulting geomagnetic storms, is described. Amongst solar variables, the initial speed of a CME is considered the most reliable predictor of the strength of the associated geomagnetic storm because fast mass ej...
